The ongoing legal battle between Athena Onassis and her former husband Álvaro Affonso (Doda) de Miranda Neto has had a new twist when a Brazilian court ruled in favour of the latter regarding the custody of a disputed horse.
The Legal court in Sao Paulo decided Cornetto K, an 11-year-old Cornet Obolensky-gelding, should return to the stables of Doda de Miranda. Nevertheless, it is the Belgian court system that has a final word in the matter.
During the past couple of years, Cornetto K has been one of the sources of dispute in the divorce settlement between Athina Onassis and Doda de Miranda.
After the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, De Miranda, the two-time Olympic medalist, was no longer permitted to be with his horse.
Although the Belgian court has a final saying in the matter, the decision of the legal court in Sao Paulo has some consequences. As such Onassis is no longer able to sell the horses that are partially or claimable by de Miranda.
Also the Brazilian show jumping rider will have to be granted access to the horses in order to be allowed to ride.
A Belgian court is expected to rule on all issues concerning the divorce in October 2017 at the earliest.
