Tinos is candidate for the “European Destination of Excellency” following National Tourism Organsation’s (GNTO) proposals, Tinos municipality announced on Thursday.
Tinos, motherland of many modern Greek artists as sculptors Giannoulis Halepas, painters Gyzis and Lytras is entitled to participate in this action. The island’s exceptional role at cultural, social and historic level is underlined in the candidancy note along with key- role of religion in the island’s population with the major pilmigrage to the Church of Panagia.
Moreover, the co-existence of Orthodox and Catholic Christians offers a special trend to the area’s culture that constitutes a major centre of Catholicism as it is noted in the candidancy proposal.
