Residents of Gavdos, the southernmost Greek island, made it clear that they are not going to let their island succumb to narco-tourism.
The municipality and local residents have been alarmed by the increase in drug use and drug-related offenses in the island over the last years.
They decided to act, in order to reassure locals as well as tourists that their island is determined to protect its image of a peaceful and family-friendly destination.
A banner in English was hoisted at the entrance of the harbor, addressed to all tourists.
“Gavdos is our homeland. Over the years, we have welcomed you to share its peace and beauty. We are simple people, we do not need drugs to see how blue the sky is. We are simple people and we want to stay that way. Zero tolerance to narco-tourism,” it wrote.
Mayor of Gavdos, Evangelia Kallinikou, notedthat “people are reacting to the prospect of turning the island to a destination for drug tourism.
“There is a perception, strengthened by various websites and social media, that Gavdos is the island of absolute liberties with tolerance to everything. It’s not like that,” Kallinikou added.
Gavdos is situated to the south of the biggest Greek island, Crete.
