Study: How can tourism in the Ionian Islands improve its competitiveness

The Region of the Ionian Islands in Greece decided to integrate the “Study on the strategy and directions of actions of the Region for the improvement of the competitiveness of tourism” into the priority axis “ETPA Technical Assistance” of the “Ionian Islands” Operational Program.

The Ionian Islands Region is a “mature” tourist destination with great international recognition and popularity, and tourism activity is of particular importance for its economic and social development.

According to the Region, however, for a number of reasons, tourism development has not yet reached the desired level, while long-term strategic planning delays impede the necessary interventions.

Therefore, it is necessary to create a framework for improving the competitiveness of tourist activity on all islands, by carrying out a study, which will aim to improve the living standards of its citizens through tourism in the medium and long term.

Creating a framework for improving the competitiveness of the island tourist destination Ionian is based on 4 axes:

a. the demand level,

b. the bidding level,

c. the level of human resources and

d. institutional level.

It includes the following items:

– Demand management strategy to optimize the mix of markets (geography as well as product oriented) through priority targeting

– Quality upgrading and enriching of tourism product-services portfolio, with a view to gradually expanding the tourist season

– Providing research support to the tourism promotion plan;

– Public-private partnerships (co-operation) and the development of partnerships and economies of scale between all Ionian islands

– HRD Strategy and support structures for public-private partnerships (ΣΔΙΤ or SDIT)

The total cost of the action amounts to 70.680 euros.
