Due to delays in their institutionalization, the new Regional Spatial Framework as well as Regional Regulatory Provisions in Greece are already in danger of being completely outdated before they are even implemented, according to study by the Greek Tourism Confederation’s (SETE) research department InSETE.
The study is entitled “Greek Tourism Developments & Prospects” and focuses on the new Regional Spatial Planning Framework and the Athens Regulatory Plan and especially their provisions for tourism.
It highlights their shortcomings and incompatibilities and emphasizes the resulting need to introduce a new specific spatial tourism oriented framework for sustainable tourism development along with stable investment-friendly tax provisions in order to attract the necessary investments as well as protect the environment.
The study draws the following conclusions regarding the Regional Spatial Planning Framework:
- Its methods and directives for neighboring destinations are contradictory
- Its plans have not been based on local and international tourist market environment
- It discourages major investments while motives for the modernization and upgrade of enterprises are not provided
- It is deficient in relevant directives and measures
- The Ionian islands along with the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Regions are excluded from integrated tourism development
