Conde Nat Traveler presents the Greek island of Amorgos as a spellbound, dream destination that took center stage in iconic movie “The Big Blue” and never disappoints its visitors, in the following report by Rachel Howard:
“Hidden-away Amorgos, with its secret beaches and untouched timelessness, is one of the most intriguing of all the Greek Islands, turning up surprises wherever you look.
There are places you long to visit for years, only to feel let down when you eventually get there. Amorgos is not one of them. I’ve been dreaming about this out-of-the-way island since watching The Big Blue as a teenager. It wasn’t just the hope that I might dive straight into the arms of Jean-Marc Barr – it was the promise of a Greek island without cruise ships or sushi bars, an island where the vanishing Greece of my childhood still exists. Even in the late 1980s, Amorgos seemed a throwback to a simpler, more elemental way of life: Luc Besson shot the opening sequence of his ode to blue in black and white.
Last summer, I finally made it. And I have to say, it is possibly the fairest Greek island of them all. Fortunately, it requires a certain amount of effort to get to, so not many people seem to bother. Even the high-speed ferry, introduced just a couple of years ago, takes six hours from Athens.
Down at the harbour, a map of the island shaped like a frisky seahorse announces: ‘Welcome to Amorgos. Nobody will find you here.’ If that’s the case, I am staying in the right place: a beautiful and unpretentious villa at the end of a bumpy dirt track balanced in solitude above a rocky shore.”
