At least 1.5 million tourists will come to Greece this year, according to conservative estimates by Greek Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura.
According to her, there is very high demand for established destinations in the country, where tour operators soon expect occupancy to reach 100%, so the Ministry along with Greek National Tourism Organization (EOT) now focus their attention on boosting demand for less well-established destinations, encouraging tour operators to channel their clientele towards those.
Regarding the Ministry’s strategic goal of extending the season, Kountoura used as an example the remote island of Nisyros, which traditionally attracted travelers only during the summer but now welcomes them from May to November.
She also cited Epirus as a typical example of rise in tourist arrivals due to very good cooperation between the Ministry and the Region, adding that the Ministry’s relations with all 13 Regions in the country are excellent allowing for better diffusion of the sector’s growth.
Kountoura claimed that the upward trend of Greek tourism is due primarily to strategic partnerships with tour operators and airlines, adding that this year the number of 4 and 5-star hotel beds in Greece has increased by 30%, appealing to tourists of higher income.
