Greek island of Kea to satisfy the most demanding visitor

The island of Kea near Athens is turning into an all-year-round destination for tourists that want to experience the wide range of alternative tourist products that the Cycladic island can offer to its visitors. According to the island’s mayor, Yiannis Evangelou, in statements to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA), Kea is as far removed from the mass tourism model as it can be.

Among its attractions is a vast network of footpaths spanning over 65km, of which 35km are traditional cobblestone roads that are signposted for visitors. Evangelou noted that 50 pct of the island is part of the NATURA 2000 network, with the royal oak dominating among the island’s flora.

The island’s mayor also pointed out the opportunities for diving holidays on the island, with possible diving activities including an exploration of the wrecks of Brittanic (the Titanic’s twin, found and explored by Jacques-Yves Cousteau in 1975, and the largest sunken passenger ship, after the Titanic), an old aeroplane and one more ship, all of which attract groups of experts from abroad who want to see them up close.
