Tourism will bring more travel, digital inspiration and “smart” experiences in 2026

Travel enthusiasm remains strong on a global scale, with 83% of travelers planning to take more or at least the same number of trips in 2026 compared to 2025.

The Middle East leads the increase in demand (+22%), followed by Asia-Pacific and Europe (9–10%), and North America (+3%). The shift towards experiences over material goods is also reflected in spending: 71% of travelers plan to spend the same or more on airfares, and 70% on accommodation, a trend mainly driven by Gen Z and Millennials.

These were some of the key findings from the new annual Horizons Report, presented by Skyscanner at ITB Asia. The report, based on surveys in 15 international markets and data from Skyscanner’s 160 million monthly users, was presented by Jarrod Kris, Head of Partnerships for the Asia-Pacific region.

Escaping crowds and choosing more flexible travel

Travelers are opting for less crowded destinations (26%) and prefer shoulder season travel (31%) to lower costs and gain more authentic experiences.
This trend is especially visible in countries like Japan, which is promoting areas beyond the well-known cities — such as Sapporo and Okinawa — for better distribution of tourism.

In Asia, the flexibility of remote work has shifted the travel peak from summer to October.

The rise of mobile-first markets and artificial intelligence

India stands out for last-minute bookings, thanks to low mobile data costs and high responsiveness to digital deals and inspiration.

At the same time, artificial intelligence is transforming travel planning:

54% of travelers say they would use it to plan a trip.

38% already use it for destination research,

33% for itinerary creation,

32% for comparing flight and hotel prices.

Despite tech’s power, word of mouth remains the most influential factor, with social media playing different roles by generation:
YouTube and Instagram for Gen Z, Facebook for Boomers, and TikTok rising rapidly.

Top destinations that stand out

In Asia, Tokyo holds the top spot due to a favorable currency and cultural appeal, followed by Seoul.

In Europe and the Middle East, London leads, while Bangkok is attracting more and more European travelers.

In the Americas, Brazil ranks first, with Spain and Tokyo following.

Portugal stands out for longer-term bookings, with an average booking window of 110 days.

The 7 new travel trends for 2026

Skyscanner’s report also highlights seven travel trends expected to dominate in 2026:

Glow-up travel: 60% of Gen Z seek wellness and beauty-focused trips.

Family Miles: A rise in intergenerational travel.

Altitude Shift: Escaping to mountains and lakes instead of ski resorts.

BookBound: Trips inspired by books and TikTok series.

Shelf Discovery: 73% enjoy exploring local markets and supermarkets.

Backdrop Effect: Choosing accommodations that are experiences in themselves.

Catching Flights and Feelings: 44% say they’re open to meeting new people while traveling.
