Greece embraces “coolcation” and extends the season

Greece is emerging as a protagonist of the new travel trend that is recorded internationally as “coolcation”, that is, holidays in a milder climate and outside the summer peak. According to a report by Travel and Tour World, the country is taking advantage of its climatic peculiarities and its rich cultural reserve, attracting an increasing number of travelers in the autumn months.

The concept of “coolcation” is gaining increasing importance as the climate crisis and extreme phenomena push many Europeans to avoid periods of intense heat. Visitors are now looking for destinations with more pleasant temperatures, tranquility and authenticity, elements that Greece offers in abundance from September to November.

At this point, it should be emphasized that destinations with a mature tourist infrastructure, such as Crete, Rhodes, the Peloponnese and the Ionian Islands, are recording a significant increase in bookings for the fall, while many hotels are choosing to extend their operation beyond October. Airlines are also maintaining their itineraries with high occupancy rates, which confirms the shift in demand towards the low season months.

The above is also supported by the latest INSETE data regarding flight seats for Greece in October, which records 1,184,392 scheduled flight seats to the country. Focusing on Crete, as the president of the Crete Hoteliers Association, Manolis Stamatakis, emphasizes in Tornos news, many resorts will remain open until mid-November, which has however been happening in recent years. And of course, the hotel accommodations in the cities of Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion on the island remain open on a year-round basis, as airlines from the main markets of Greek tourism supply a significant number of visitors even in winter.

The above activity, as highlighted in the international publication, lengthens the tourist season, while strengthening local economies and creating new employment opportunities. Moreover, travelers who choose autumn holidays tend to spend more per night, seeking high-quality experiences and contact with culture and nature.

At the same time, Greece, always according to the publication, is consolidating its position as a four-season destination, adapting its strategy to the new needs of global tourism. The combination of authenticity, sustainability and temperate climate makes the country capable of starring in the next chapter of the European travel map.

In any case, autumn is now emerging as a period of opportunity for Greek tourism – a time that can combine the quality, sobriety and timeless appeal of Greece, proving that the tourist season does not end with summer.
