German bookings for Heraklion airport decline by 11% in October

German bookings for Heraklion fell by 11% in October, compared to the same month last year, according to TravelTainment’s data monitor.

During the same period, bookings for the main Egyptian destination airport of Hurghada soared by 30% last month, according to monthly figures for the top ten destination airports from leading German holiday reservations provider Traveltainment. As a result, Hurghada increased its market share (out of all bookings for the ten largest destination airports) by two percentage points to 14%.

Strong growth

There was even stronger growth for Marsa Alam, the second-largest Red Sea coast airport, with a 90% rise compared to October 2014. This brought the airport into the top ten ranking with a 4% share.

Elsewhere, Palma also showed strong growth for the first time in several months with an 11% increase, which maintained its market share of 19%. The Canary Islands generated better demand with increases for Fuerteventura (7%) and Las Palmas (5%), although Tenerife (-5%) and Arrecife (-10%) were weaker than at the same time last year.

Internet Booking Engine

Antalya generated stable growth with a 4% rise in bookings, but its market leadership declined by five percentage points to 29% due to the stronger growth of other airports. 

A long-haul destination entered the top ten ranking. Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic increased bookings by 7% compared to October 2014, giving it a 2% share of top ten airport bookings.

Traveltainment’s Bistro system is used by some 11,000 travel agencies in Germany to make package holiday bookings from 130 tour operators, while its Internet Booking Engine is used by more than 350 online travel agents and portals.
