Athens International Airport attained its best passenger traffic record ever, during 2015.
Following the announcement of passenger traffic data for December 2015 (up 11.8% to 1.18 million passengers), last year closed for Athens airport with an increase of 19% in passenger traffic which totaled a record 18.1 million passengers.
Better than before the crisis
This figure exceeds by 2.9 million the 2014 traffic and by 1.55 million the best performance to date which occurred in 2007, before the eruption of the economic crisis.
Both domestic and international passengers recorded the highest performance in the airport’s operating history, with 6.4 million (+ 22.1%) and 11.7 million (+17,4%) respectively. Foreign visitors increased by 26% and Greeks travelers increased by 11%.
New airlines and routes
During the year, 9 new airlines were activated at the Athens airport and 10 new routes were added, while there has been significant increase (+ 29%) of destinations served by low cost airlines. These positive developments led to an increase in weekly frequencies by 19%.
Transfer passengers also increased by 38% while the increase of passengers who used Athens as a stopover to travel between international destinations was particularly impressive (+60%), a fact which demonstrates the significant enhancement of the interconnectivity of Athens.
