Kalamata international airport “Captain Vassilis Konstantakopoulos” will attract more European travelers and improve accessibility to the Messinia Prefecture by nine new nonstop flights from two new airlines.
The new flights commence from April 2016 as follows:
• British Airways will operate 2 flights per week from London Heathrow every Thursday and Saturday.
• Vueling will operate one flight from Rome Fiumicino in Italy on Friday.
• Aegean Airlines will offer this year six new flights from Milan (Tuesday), Copenhagen (Monday), Billund (Monday), Paris (Tuesday), Lyon ( Tuesday) and Nandi (Saturday).
28% increase in arrivals
Tourism season in Messinia, starts from February and ends during the last week of November.
The estimated increase in arrivals for 2016 will reach 28% compared with 2015.
The overall increase in international flights since 2010 (when Costa Navarino opened) until today exceeds 218%. The new flights are expected to bring 25,000 additional visitors in the Peloponnese.
The direct revenue from visitors’ increase in Messinia for 2016 is expected to be 17.5 million euros. The secondary effect on the economy is calculated at 28.8 million euros, according to the tourist activity income multiplier of 2.65 calculated by Greece’s Planning and Economic Research (KEPE).
