India’s domestic aviation sector continued to boom in the first quarter of 2016.
According to the latest data from the country’s Ministry of Civil Aviation, the number of passengers carried by Indian airlines on domestic routes reached 23 million in the first three months of the year, up 24.0% compared to the same period in 2015.
IndiGo, with 8.5m passengers, retained its status as India’s largest domestic carrier, followed by Jet Airways (4.2m), Air India (3.5m), SpiceJet (3.0m) and GoAir (1.9m).
This means that low-cost IndiGo now has a 37% share of India’s domestic market, with Jet Airways accounting for 18%, Air India 15% and SpiceJet 13%.
Vistara, Singapore Airlines’ new Delhi-based carrier, came top in terms of punctuality, with an on-time performance of 91.5% in the first quarter. Indigo (86.8%) and SpiceJet (84.1%) completed the top three.
