Passenger traffic in Greek airports up by 9% in January

Passenger traffic in the Athens International Airport grew 10.4 pct to 1.2 million in January this year, compared with the corresponding month in 2016. Domestic passenger traffic eased 1.8 pct, but international passenger traffic jumped 18.5 pct in the first month of 2017.

Greek travelers grew 19 pct while foreign travelers remained unchanged compared with 2016 levels. The number of scheduled flights totaled 11,898 in January, up 3.9 pct from January last year, of which domestic flights eased 0.2 pct and international flights rose 7.1 pct

At the same time, airports in Greece saw a significant rise in passenger traffic in January 2017, handling 1.92 million passengers travelling through their gates compared with 1.76 million in the same month last year.

The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, last month Greek airports announced a 9% rise in traffic compared to the same period in 2016 with Thessaloniki (365,290), Heraklion (77,387), Chania (67,570) and Rhodes (55,228) immediately following Athens.

Airports with the highest rate of passenger traffic growth compared to the same month last year were those in Kasos (121 in January 2016/305 in January 2017), Paros (1,336 in January 2016/2,650 in January 2017) and Zakynthos (1,548 in January 2016/2,915 in January 2017).

The total number of flights at Greek airports reached 20,199 of which 12,174 were domestic and 8.025 were international, representing an increase of 1.2 % compared to the same period in 2016.
