Larnaca and Paphos airports are set to be updated with new automated passport recognition systems, media reports said on Wednesday.
The new hardware – which is set to start functioning on July 15 – will be put in place due to the increased tourist flows expected this summer, Phileleftheros newspaper reported.
The newspaper added that baggage checks will be taken on by private companies, freeing up more police to check passports.
Passports will be doubly checked, according to the newspaper, with systems being put in place, where passengers can place their passport to see if entrance will be granted to the country. Police will then run the second check on passports.
Police received directions to conduct extensive checks when fraudulent documents are discovered, so as to provide coverage on issues that might deal with terrorism.
The new systems were discussed at a meeting of the Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou with police.
During the conference, the participants evaluated the measures that need to be taken in an effort to aid travellers.
