Two-thirds of all air travel searches in 2025 are for international travel.
This conclusion comes from Kayak’s latest research, which processes findings from billions of travel information queries on its platforms each year, helping millions of travelers around the world make the best decisions.
According to the survey, airline bookings for international flights in 2025 by US travelers are currently down 4% compared to the same time last year (for 2024), while bookings for domestic travel are up to 3%.
It also finds that hotel prices appear to be holding steady in 2025 versus 2024, both for American domestic travel and international travel. On the contrary, rent-a-car prices have increased by 8% internationally and by 4% domestically.
Asia attracts American interest for 2025
Asia is the most popular region for budget-conscious American travelers next year and has been Kayak’s top trending region for several years. Air tickets to Asia are the cheapest in three years, with ticket prices falling 7% compared to 2024. Japan leads demand in Asia, with three of Kayak’s top 10 destinations located there.
Traveler interest in visiting Japan in general is up 11% compared to 2024, while airline ticket prices are down 5%. Tokyo has emerged as the most searched international destination for 2025, with interest in the destination increasing by 11% this year. Meanwhile, interest in Sapporo – a center for festivals – is up 31 percent, and interest in Osaka – Japan’s culinary capital – is up 12 percent.
Elsewhere in the world, there is also a shift towards less frequented destinations rather than traditional popular ones. For example, travelers prefer Cusco to Lima in Peru and choose Da Nang over Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. When it comes to finding a destination where costs are down compared to 2024, the Caribbean appears to be the best option for Americans. Air travel in this region is the lowest it has been in three years, with airfares down 17%.
Booking tips for 2025
Kayak experts also stress that travelers should take advantage of good deals to book and not wait for the elusive “best spot.” The platform claims that there is no longer a best time to book. However, data shows that booking more than six months from your departure date actually coincides with higher prices, so it may be better to book earlier.
As the departure date approaches, as highlighted, week-to-week price changes seem fairly insignificant, but setting a price alert can help the traveler track airfares and find the best prices. When it comes to deciding when is the cheapest time to travel internationally it was revealed that 2024 was February.
