Volotea: Cancellations and fewer flights from Athens, ahead of base closure

The routes of the Spanish airline Volotea in Athens are being reduced, ahead of the closure of the carrier’s base at El. Venizelos Airport, at the end of winter 2025, after 6 years of operation.

Therefore, the Athens – Heraklion and Athens – Mykonos connections, which were to start on March 30, 2025, with 1 and 2 daily flights respectively, are being canceled.

At the same time, the Athens – Santorini connection is being limited in both flight frequency and duration. Specifically, from 3 daily flights during the period from March 30 to October 25, it is being converted to 1 daily flight from July 4 to August 31, 2025. The flights will be operated with an A320 aircraft.

However, the company has announced that its flight schedule to and from Athens airport was to be maintained, with 330,000 seats per year, and that it would continue to offer 100 routes through its codeshare agreement with its partner and minority shareholder, Aegean Airlines.

The closure of the Athens base reflects Volotea’s shift to more profitable markets and its effort to reallocate its resources more efficiently. The company’s fleet consists of 42 aircraft (18 A319-100 and 24 A320-200), which are mainly focused on its three core markets, which account for over 90% of its scheduled weekly capacity: France, Spain, and Italy. After all, Greece is the smallest of Volotea’s key markets, representing just 0.7% of its weekly scheduled capacity.
