Certification of 10 state airports to European standards completed

The certification of 10 state airports has been completed in accordance with the standards of the European Aviation Safety Agency, which is an important step towards strengthening aviation safety and improving the quality of services to passengers and airlines.

The Basic Regulation (EU) 2018/1139 stipulates that all airports serving commercial flights and having an instrument runway length of more than 800 meters must comply with the certification standards of the EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency).

The aim is to harmonise airport infrastructure and individual operational procedures in order to ensure, in a uniform manner, compliance with safety regulations among member states and their alignment with the established standards of the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization).

Of the 25 airports managed by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), ten (10) must be certified – according to EASA – by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), based on the existing regulatory framework, and specifically the airports of Heraklion, Alexandroupoli, Syros, Milos, Ioannina, Kythira, Sitia, Chios, Karpathos and Limnos.

Over the last 12 months, the CAA and the APA have collaborated systematically and methodically for the successful completion of the process, with the airports being certified gradually:

January 24, 2025: Heraklion, Alexandroupoli
January 31, 2025: Syros, Milos, Ioannina
February 14, 2025: Kythira, Sitia, Chios
February 28, 2025: Karpathos, Lemnos

For the latter two, there was also good cooperation with the General Air Staff (GEA), given that they are used jointly with the Air Force.
