Fraport Greece: Which airports "passed the mark" in May

Passenger traffic at the 14 Regional airports managed by Fraport Greece increased by 2.4% in the first 5 months of 2025, compared to the corresponding period of 2024, following the announcement of the May results. In total, 7.6 million passengers were handled at the 14 airports compared to 7.4 million in the first five months of 2024. May moved slightly upwards with a 1% increase in passenger traffic compared to May 2024 and almost 3.7 million in passenger traffic.

According to passenger traffic data presented by Fraport Greece, May closed with -5.6% in domestic passenger traffic (total 696,406), while on the contrary, international passenger traffic at the 14 regional airports increased by 2.7% and amounted to almost 3 million.

The largest increase in the first five months of 2025 was recorded at Kefalonia Airport (+9.7%), followed by Thessaloniki (+7.1%), Kos (+6.1%), and Aktion Airport (+5.3%).

Notable is the double-digit decline that continues to be observed in the flagship of Greek tourism, Santorini (-24.4%), after the aftermath of the geological phenomena that occurred on the island in February, with passenger traffic reaching 463,010 from 612,689 passengers in the first five months of 2024. Smaller losses were recorded in Mykonos, where passenger traffic reached 198,221 compared to 204,477 passengers in the corresponding period last year. Skiathos also fell, with a 9.1% decrease in passenger traffic in the first five months.

Which markets attracted Santorini and Mykonos in May

In May, passenger traffic losses in Santorini amounted to 21.4% compared to May 2024, while Mykonos showed timid signs of recovery (+0.8%), which are due exclusively to the upward trend of international passenger traffic (+9.4% compared to -8% domestic passenger traffic).

Regarding arrivals in Santorini, May closed with 126,160, most of which were from Greece (64,818), with Athens playing a key role as an intermediate stop for international visitors to the island. This was followed by 25,340 arrivals from the U. Kingdom, 8,401 from France, 6,352 from Germany, 6,080 from Italy, 3,175 from Switzerland, 2,956 from Ireland, 2,157 from Israel, 1,383 from the Netherlands, 1,187 from Finland, 1,031 from Norway, and a smaller number from Turkey, Belgium and other countries.

In Mykonos, on the other hand, arrivals in May amounted to 67,924, of which 29,965 came from Greece, and 14,353 from the UK. Basil, 6,076 from France, 5,669 from Germany, 2,783 from Switzerland, 2,637 from Italy, 2,163 from Austria, 1,713 from Israel, 1,443 from the Netherlands, and a smaller number from Spain and other countries.

Passenger traffic also fell in May in Skiathos (-7.3%), Mytilene (-5.5%), and Kavala (-4.1%). On the contrary, the largest increase was recorded by Kefalonia airport (+9.5%), followed by Aktion (+7.3%), Corfu (+7.1%), Chania (+5.6%), and Kos (+5%).

In terms of arrivals, the 14 regional airports welcomed in May 2025, 540,022 British travelers, 351,583 Greeks, 333,448 Germans, 109,134 Poles and smaller numbers of travelers from the Netherlands (87,720), France (58,228), Sweden (57,837), Denmark (54,964), Finland (44,127), Belgium (42,908) and Norway (39,263).
