The direct air connection between Crete and Ioannina is requested by the relevant ministries, in a joint announcement, by the cultural associations of Epirotes of the island.
The Associations of Epirotes of the prefectures of Lasithi, Heraklion, Rethymno, and Chania are requesting the immediate re-announcement of the tender for the barren Heraklion – Ioannina air route, a process that, as they note, has been pending for years, without any new information so far.
As the Associations point out, the routing of this specific flight is very important for both Regions, given that there is a great demand in both directions for the movement of Epirotes living in Crete who suffer a lot to reach Ioannina. It is also important for the movement of students, professionals and individual tourists.
The Crete – Ioannina air connection, they emphasize, will constitute a development axis that will unite two of the most vibrant and touristic regions of Greece and its operation constitutes an investment in regional cohesion, in tourist extroversion and in the sustainable movement of citizens, given the interest of Cretans in the winter destinations of Epirus and the corresponding interest of Epirus residents in the summer destinations of Crete.
