In a bold move signaling its global expansion, Aegean Airlines announced the acquisition of two new Airbus A321neo XLR aircraft, paving the way for long-haul routes and the launch of direct flights to India starting in March 2026.
Strategic Expansion to Asia
At a special presentation, Aegean’s President Eftychios Vassilakis and CEO Dimitris Gerogiannis outlined the airline’s development strategy. The order of the two XLR aircraft comes as a response to delivery delays of four previously ordered A321neo LR aircraft, now expected in mid-2027.
“The next century belongs to Asia,” said Mr. Vassilakis, emphasizing the importance of establishing an early presence in the rapidly growing Asian market—particularly in India.
The new aircraft will be delivered in December 2025 and January 2026, enabling Aegean to quickly launch its first-ever long-haul routes outside the EU.
India Flights: A Strategic New Connection
Aegean becomes the first Greek airline to operate direct flights to India.
March 2026: Five weekly flights to New Delhi
May 2026: Three weekly flights to Mumbai
The airline also plans partnerships with Indian carriers, including Indigo and Air India, to extend its reach within the subcontinent.
This entry into the Indian market is a cornerstone of Aegean’s international growth strategy, aiming to position Athens as a regional hub between Europe and Asia.
Passenger Experience Elevated
The Airbus A321neo XLR (Extra Long Range) brings next-generation comfort and efficiency:
Range: up to 8,500 km
Flight duration: up to 10.5 hours
Cabin configuration: 138 seats total
24 Business Class Suites with lie-flat seats and high privacy
Economy class with:
Extra legroom
4K personal entertainment systems
Satellite Wi-Fi
USB charging ports
Modern overhead storage
Fleet Expansion and Investment
With the addition of these two XLRs, Aegean’s total A320/A321neo fleet orders reach 60 aircraft, with 36 already delivered. The remaining 24 aircraft will be delivered progressively by 2031, representing a $4 billion investment.
Future destinations under consideration include:
Maldives
Seychelles
Nairobi
Bangalore
Almaty
Lagos
Some longer-haul markets like Cape Town are being evaluated for launch post-2027, depending on demand and feasibility.
Note: The A321neo XLR does not have the range to serve direct flights to the Americas, which limits Aegean’s westward expansion—for now.
A New Era of Global Competitiveness
Mr. Vassilakis described the XLR investment as the start of “a new chapter” for Aegean:
“With upgraded fleet capabilities, vertically integrated support infrastructure, and—most importantly—the creativity and drive of our people, we move forward with ambitious but measured steps.”
This strategy enhances not only Aegean’s position globally but also boosts Greece’s role as a key player in international aviation, especially in connecting with emerging markets in Asia and Africa.
