Emirates tops JFK Fly Quiet program rankings

Emirates has earned the Gold Tier distinction in the Fly Quiet 2024 program at John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airport in New York, becoming the only airline to receive this honor. With a score of 92.9, Emirates stood out significantly among the other carriers operating at the airport and participating in the program.

The Fly Quiet program, developed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, is a voluntary initiative encouraging airlines to reduce aircraft noise through the use of quieter aircraft, the implementation of noise-abatement procedures, and the selection of specific takeoff and landing runways.

The Gold Tier recognition reflects Emirates’ commitment to reducing noise at one of the world’s busiest and most operationally complex airports. Since the program’s inception, Emirates has worked closely with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, with its Flight Operations team making continuous efforts to exceed all program requirements. This recent distinction at one of the busiest international airports adds to a series of noise management awards in recent years, including Silver Tier in Newark Airport’s Fly Quiet program (EWR) and the President’s Award in San Francisco International Airport’s Fly Quiet program (SFO).

The noise levels of Emirates’ fleet are recorded at 12 EPNdB below the limits set by ICAO Chapter 4. The airline’s entire fleet of large, high-capacity aircraft transports passengers efficiently while achieving optimal noise management. Each flight sector averages 1.75 million passenger-kilometers, with noise generated only during takeoff and landing. In other words, Emirates operates long-haul, nonstop flights while maintaining low noise levels.

The use of large, high-capacity aircraft significantly improves overall acoustic performance. For example, on a route serving 500 passengers per day, a single Emirates Airbus A380 completes the journey with one takeoff and one landing—two moments of noise generation. If the same route were operated by smaller aircraft with different noise characteristics, up to three flights per direction and possibly an intermediate stop would be required, resulting in more noise events for the same passenger volume. Thus, Emirates’ network and business model, based on large aircraft and high-capacity flights, optimizes noise output while maintaining essential connectivity for global communities.

Air connectivity brings benefits that extend far beyond the airport—connecting families and friends across the world, boosting local economies, creating jobs, facilitating international trade and tourism, and contributing to prosperity and growth.

Commitment to Quieter Skies

Reducing aircraft noise is crucial for protecting the health and quality of life of communities living near airports. Emirates is committed to minimizing its noise impact, supporting local communities at its destinations, and recognizing that even small operational decisions can lead to significant reductions in ground-level noise.

The airline’s noise reduction strategy leverages all available tools while maintaining high operational standards, and includes the following key elements:

Compliance with noise-abatement procedures and operating restrictions:
Emirates’ strategy requires strict adherence to Noise Abatement Departure Procedures (NADP) as published by relevant authorities. These procedures are integrated into the airline’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and are meticulously followed by all crews. Emirates also ensures continuous compliance with each airport’s operating hours and restrictions, respecting local regulations.

Preference for low-noise runways:
Emirates actively uses low-noise runways whenever operationally feasible, even under challenging conditions such as crosswinds, while always maintaining the highest safety standards.

Transparency and accountability:
Transparency and accountability are at the core of Emirates’ operational philosophy. Any deviation from noise-abatement procedures requires a mandatory crew report, which is thoroughly reviewed to identify causes and implement corrective measures. This continuous feedback loop reinforces the airline’s commitment to ongoing improvement and responsible operations.

Quieter fleet:
Emirates operates one of the quietest widebody fleets in the industry, with overall noise levels that meet or exceed ICAO Chapter 4 and 14 standards. Continuous investment in fleet modernization ensures that noise performance remains at the cutting edge of technology and continues to improve in the years ahead.

Collaboration with stakeholders:
Emirates’ approach to noise reduction extends beyond technical excellence. Collaboration with authorities and stakeholders is central to sharing knowledge and best practices. The airline actively participates in airport roundtables and working groups, maintains strict compliance with documentation and reporting requirements, and strengthens trust and transparency with regulators and local communities.
