The serious technical problem that caused extensive delays and the grounding of aircraft at the countrys airports is on a path of gradual restoration.
According to information, the resumption of flights is starting with departures. As reported by Athens International Airport (AIA), the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority has begun operating certain flights, based on the capabilities of the Air Traffic system, stressing that efforts toward full restoration are continuing.
According to a new update from the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, at 12:50 up to 35 departures and arrivals were being handled at Greek airports, while overflights were being partially processed in three sectors of the Athens FIR.
The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority confirms that the issue concerns the radio frequencies serving the Athens FIR and is being addressed in coordination with external bodies and EUROCONTROL. As noted, this is a technical issue of unprecedented scale, which continues to be investigated, while an updated NOTAM has been issued.
Similar problems were also recorded at Thessalonikis Macedonia Airport, where delays in departures and arrivals were noted, as well as one flight cancellation to Stuttgart.
In their announcements, both Aegean and Sky Express point out that the technical problem in the Greek airspace control systems has significantly reduced capacity, causing delays and changes to the flight schedule, while assuring that efforts are being made to limit passenger inconvenience.
