Holidays in the Greek island of Crete are not just about beaches, nightlife and culture. Crete is also is also renowned for its culinary specialities.
Perhaps the simpler and most delicious of its many appetizers is called dakos.
British food expert Yotam Ottolenghi once said that he developed a ‘not-so-mild obsession’ with dakos.
Also named koukouvagia, this Cretan meze consists of a slice of soaked dried bread or barley rusk topped with chopped tomatoes and crumbled feta or mizithra cheese, and flavored with herbs such as dried oregano. Olives and pepper can also be added.
The juices seep into the crunchy bread, offering an experience you’ll be ready to savor anytime.
Add the right glass of local wine to that and you’ll feel somewhere near Crete’s paradise.
Unlike most things that you come across on vacation, it tastes pretty much the same when you make it back home, said Ottolenghi.
Whether you eat it for breakfast, lunch or as a snack any time of the day, is always wholesome and nurturing.
