The indigenous olive variety “Makri”, cultivated in the region of Alexandroupolis, northeastern Greece, will be included in the European Union’s list of products with protected designation of origin (PDO) during the next 2-3 months, according to the president of a local agricultural olive oil cooperative.
Speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA), Demosthenis Hatzinikolaou spoke of the time-consuming process of adding the “Makri” local olive variety in the National Catalog of Varieties, which is a precondition to proceed with the PDO designation, and eventually filing for a PDO status. He pointed out that the procedure lasted eight years.
“Due to the climate and the region, we have a very good quality of olive oil. The ‘Makri’ olive oil stands out for its acidity, taste, high phenolic content,” he noted, adding that a lot of work is still needed to organize producers and make members of the cooperative believe in their abilities.
