Almost one fifth (18.1 pct) of the European Union’s fishing fleet in 2016 was registered in Greece, followed by Italy (14.7 pct) and Spain (11.1 pct), data from Eurostat showed on Tuesday, ANA reports.
On average, nevertheless, these Greek vessels are small, with an average size of 4.7 gross tonnes (much less than the EU-28 average of 19.0 gross tonnes) and an average engine power of 28.4 kilowatts in 2016 (compared with an EU-28 average of 75.7 kilowatts).
It should be noted that Greek fishes are among the most tasteful in the world thanks to the special conditions prevailing in the Greek seas.
