Appeal of Greece's Aegean island mayors to Europarliament over VAT hike

A petition by the mayors of Greece’s North and South Aegean islands along with their respective Regional Unions has been approved as acceptable for consideration by the relevant European Parliament’s Committee.

In the petition, the mayors argue that the islands are unequally treated in relation to the rest of the country in terms of VAT and the abolition of the reduced rate.

Greek island authorities and tourism officials have repeatedly called on the government to re-examine its decision regarding the abolition of reduced value-added-tax (VAT) rates for 27 Northeast Aegean and Dodecanese islands which took effect on January 1.

Only five Aegean islands, burdened by refugee flows, will maintain their special tax status until June 30.
