With the central message “Sfakia: When the Mountains Touch the Sea”, the Municipality of Sfakia is actively participating in the Earth Festival 2025, offering an experiential experience that goes beyond the limits of simple presentation and turns into a journey into the myth and essence of an authentic place.
At the Municipality’s pavilion, visitors will have the opportunity to “walk” through digital projections and interactive displays, the relief of an area where the sharp mountains of the White Mountains descend steeply to meet the deep blue embrace of the Libyan Sea. The geomorphology of Sfakia unfolds impressively: gorges, caves, underwater formations, and coastlines that testify to the timeless harmony of nature and culture.
A special presence at the pavilion is the painter Georgia Kantounataki from Loutro Sfakia, who transforms finds from the sea – wood, stones, metals – into unique works of art. Through her art, the maritime identity of Sfakia gains new life, with each object telling its own story – a story of saltiness, survival, and transformation.
The presence of Sfakia at the Festival also honors the spiritual wealth of the region, with a digital tribute to the work of researcher and writer Antonis Plymakis. Cartographies, photographs, and excerpts from his extensive work highlight the way in which scientific observation and literary writing capture the indelible imprint of a place on the soul of its people.
