Mushroom hunters boost tourism activity
Mushroom hunting attracts nature and gastronomy enthusiasts, as internationally, the trend of foraging, which means searching for food from nature, is growing rapidly, with enthusiasts organizing trips exclusively for mushroom picking.
In Greece, dozens of local mushroom clubs are active in areas such as Grevena, known as the “Mushroom City”, but also in Olympus, which is emerging as a hotspot for mushroom lovers. It is estimated that at least 5,000 people participate in organized mushroom picking trips each year.
In addition, mushroom cultivation is booming in Greece, with local producers experimenting with varieties such as pleurotus and shiitake. Moreover, mushrooms are now considered a “superfood”, increasing the interest of both the gastronomic community and tourists seeking authentic experiences. The sustainability of their production is also often included in ecological excursions and green tourism packages. Visitors to mushroom festivals have the opportunity to experience the cultivation process firsthand, while cooking competitions and creative activities for children are often organized, enhancing the family element.
‘As for international “mushrooming” destinations, popular destinations in Europe include areas of Italy, Spain and France, where interesting thematic excursions are organized.
