ELSTAT: + 4% overnight stays in hotels and campings in Greece during 2015

According to the survey of ELSTAT on arrivals and nights spent in hotels, similar establishments and tourist campsites, for the total of these establishments, in 2015 compared with 2014, an increase of 6.1% is recorded in arrivals and 3.9% of nights spent.

More specifically, in 2015, an increase is observed in arrivals and nights spent by non-residents, of 7.2% and 4.4% compared with 2014 and the arrivals and nights spent by residents, of 3.7% and 1.7 %.

The total occupancy of the bed places in hotels and similar establishments (excluding tourist campsites), which is calculated taking into account the nights spent compared to the bed places that were in operation, amounted to 49.1% in 2015, compared with 47.3% in 2014.

More specifically, according to the monthly data, 84.9% of the arrivals and 92.3% of the nights spent, in hotels, similar establishments and tourist campsites of Greece, are recorded during the period from April to October

As regards the breakdown of data by Region, an increase of arrivals and nights spent in hotels, similar establishments and tourist campsites is observed in all Regions of Greece, excluding West Macedonia and Epirus. A significant increase of arrivals and nights spent, in absolute values, is recorded in the Regions of Central Macedonia (13.2% in arrivals and 11.3% in nights spent), South Aegean (17.3% in arrivals and 24.2% in nights spent), Attica (20.3% in arrivals and 10.3% in nights spent) and Ionian islands (7.4% in arrivals and 10.8% in nights spent).

In 2015, the largest share of arrivals and nights spent in hotels, similar establishments and tourist campsites, in absolute values, is recorded by customers (guests) whose country of residence is in Europe (81.0% of arrivals and 91.0% of nights spent) with important contribution from the EU Members States (66.3% of arrivals and 74.3% of nights spent). The largest contribution concerning arrivals, in absolute values, is recorded for United Kingdom (12.8% of arrivals and 16.1% of nights spent), France (8.3% of arrivals and 7.1% of nights spent), Germany (11.8% of arrivals and 16.2% of nights spent) and Poland (3.5% of arrivals and 4.2% of nights spent). For the rest European countries the largest contribution is recorded for Turkey (1.9% of arrivals and 0.7% of nights spent).

When comparing the data on arrivals and nights spent hotels, similar establishments and tourist campsites, by country of residence of the customers (guests) of the year 2015 with the corresponding data of the year 2014, a significant increase of arrivals, in absolute values, is recorded, as regards the EU countries, for United Kingdom (16.0% in arrivals and 17.4% in nights spent), France (15.8% in arrivals and 12.8% in nights spent), Germany (7.9% in arrivals and 5.3% in nights spent), Poland (21.8% in arrivals and 21.9% in nights spent) and Bulgaria (15.4% in arrivals and 15.7% in nights spent). As regards the other European countries a significant decrease of arrivals, in absolute values, is observed for Russia (-32.1% of arrivals and -33.2% of nights spent). As regards the rest continents, a significant increase of arrivals, in absolute values, is observed for Asia, with a large contribution from People’s Republic of China (2.2% in arrivals and 0.7% in nights spent) and from America, with  a large contribution from USA (5.9%  in  arrivals and 2.6%  in nights spent) (Tables 7 and 8).
