Shocking data for arrivals in hotels and camping during this year’s season were recorded by the Greek Statistical Authority ELSTAT.
According to this data, 117, 784 fewer foreign tourists arrived at Greek hotels and campings between January – September 2016 compared to the same period last year. Arrivals of foreign tourists dropped to 11.55 million compared to 11.67 million in the first nine months of 2015. The overall number of arrivals closed marginally positive (+ 0.2%), reaching 16.38 million thanks to the arrivals of Greek tourists compared to 16.34 million last year .
Moreover, hotel occupancy declined to 51.6% from 52.9% over the same period last year. Overnight stays by foreign tourists in hotels and campings recorded a marginal increase of 0.9% reaching 59.6 million. The overall number of overnight stays increased by 1.5% reaching 71.7 million again thanks to domestic tourists. The average stay per person in hotels and camping was 4.4 nights with the average stay of foreign tourists at 5.2 nights and of Greeks at 2.5 nights. During the respective period in 2015 the average stay per person was 4.3 nights, per foreign tourist 5.1 and per Greek tourist 2.5.
