Increased overnight stays in Thessaloniki during H1 2017 – the top nationalities

The number of overnight stays in hotels in Thessaloniki in the first half of 2017 (January – June) has risen, according to the Thessaloniki Hotel Association. In the first half of 2017, 1,083,551 overnight stays were recorded compared to 1,047,161 overnight stays in the first half of 2016.

Of the total, 35,596 stays were booked in cooperation with UNHCR and NGOs that hosted refugees and immigrants from Iraq and Syria.

Regarding nationalities, Greeks ranked first with 565,273 overnight stays down by 6.26% against the same period last year (603,010), followed by Cypriots with 62,962 stays up by 5.13%, tourists from Turkey with 39,286 stays – a growth of 4.74% – and German travelers at 35,935, showing an increase of 29.57%compared to last year.

The number of Israeli visitors soared by 63.06% with 30,107 overnight stays while US visitors decreased by 2.33% to only 24,736 stays.

At the same time, monthly data released by tourism experts GBR Consulting indicate that even though the average room rate grew by 4.4% and the relevant revenue (RevPar) by 7.9% during the first half of 2017, RevPar continues to be low by European standards at 45.49 euros.
