Greek tourism entrepreneur Andreas Metaxas, owner of Creta Maris, is expanding his hotel in Santorini by constructing new suites and plans to create a new unit on a 8-acre lot at Vlychada area on the island. Speaking to Heraklion’s Patris newspaper on his decision to invest in Santorini and not in Crete, where Creta Maris and Candia Maris hotels operate, he explained:
“I have chosen a different destination because I feel that investment in Santorini is more profitable. Santo Maris Oia, which opened in April 2016 with 42 suites and 2 villas, is already expanding with another 13 suites.”
According to him, the way to attract customers to such units is very different than the one for large complexes offering “all inclusive” packages.
In large units, 70% -90% of bookings are made through tour operators, while in the luxury boutique hotel sector 70% – 90% bookings are made by the customers themselves, who seek very high quality services that they are willing to pay for.
It is indicative that the average night rate at Santo Maris is 500-700 euros for two people with breakfast, while the price at the villa rises up to 1,600 euros per night.
The unit was distinguished at Mr and Mrs Smith Awards as one of the best boutique hotels in the world.
In a good, four-star hotel in Crete, a whole week of holidays in April with an all inclusive package costs 800 euros or much cheaper.
Mr. Metaxas notes that most guests are Americans, English, Australians and New Zealanders and their average stay is 1-2 days, because in addition to Santorini they visit other destinations in Greece.
