New tourism bill tabled in Greek Parliament includes sustainability classification system

A new bill was tabled in Parliament by the Ministry of Tourism, following up on earlier legislative efforts, in the context of an overall strategy for Greek tourism’s development under sustainable terms.

Some of the basic regulations are as follows:

– A framework will be established for short-term rental operations, including regulations on health and safety. Regulations will allow the Ministry of Tourism to inspect them, in collaboration with the Independent Authority for Public Revenue.

– A new system, a first globally, will be introduced to classify hotels on the basis of sustainability and their impact on the environment. The plan was worked on by the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels and the Technical Chamber of Greece.

– Hotels will be allowed to utilize staff rooms for rent to public sector employees such as doctors and nurses in the National Health System, teachers, and seasonal firefighters.

– Ski centers will be allowed to enrich their tourist infrastructures with entertainment and outdoor activities throughout the year.

– Owners of tourism facilities will be allowed to build and use pumps for seawater, particularly in regions with water shortages.

– Accessibility works for people with disabilities will be simplified so they may go forward faster. This is part of the national strategy for people with disabilities.

– Procedures to open and run car rental offices will become simplified.
