Amadeus Research: How Hotels Can Increase Revenue Per Room by 12%

  • New research from Amadeus, a leading technology company in the travel industry, reveals travelers’ preferences and the role technology plays in making their travel dreams come true. In fact, it highlights that special amenities could increase hotels’ average daily revenue by 12%.

Travelers pay more for personalized amenities

The research shows that 63% of hotel guests are willing to pay extra for special amenities, such as a specific view, floor, in-room Xbox or adding local attractions to their stay package. These additional features can increase hotels’ average daily revenue (ADR) by 12%, leading to an annual revenue increase of more than $5,300 per room for a mid-sized hotel chain.

New ways to inspire and book trips

Traditional methods of information are changing. The influence of social media and travel influencers has grown significantly over the past five years, while the importance of newspapers, travel agents, and television advertising has fluctuated.

Personalization is key for leisure travelers

  • Travelers are looking for personalized service at their hotels:
  • 50% say a personalized welcome would significantly improve their experience.
  • 52% are willing to share personal data to receive personalized offers.
    48% prefer traditional reception to self-service check-in.

Business travelers are looking for more technology

Business travelers are focused on efficiency and technology:

  • 71% are interested in online or self-service check-in.
    22% want the ability to pay with cryptocurrencies or digital wallets, indicating a shift in the payments landscape.
    Lack of travel insurance is costly

Travelers surveyed said that not having travel insurance has cost them an average of $1,210 per person. For Chinese travelers, this figure is over $2,500.

VR and AI are changing the travel experience

  • 82% of business travelers and 66% of leisure travelers want to explore a destination through virtual reality (VR) before traveling
  • 50% say they would rely on artificial intelligence (AI) for restaurant recommendations at their destination.
  • 18% would use an AI assistant to write hotel or restaurant reviews.

Research Methodology

The “Travel Dreams” survey is based on data from 6,000 travelers in the US, China, India, the UK, France and Germany. It was conducted by Opinium Research in partnership with leading industry players, including hotel chains, transportation companies and insurance organizations.
