“Very serious incident” – CT scan and possible airlift to Athens expected
According to the deputy commander of Rhodes Hospital, Michalis Sokorelos, the child was transported in a coma, while shortly before 3 pm he was expected to undergo a CT scan to determine whether he has suffered from cerebral edema.
“It will depend on the diagnosis whether he will be transported by emergency airlift to Athens,” said Mr. Sokorelos, speaking of a “very serious incident.”
He stressed that the child does not react to stimuli, fighting to stay alive.
A tourist doctor provided first aid
According to the deputy commander, a British doctor-emergency physician happened to be at the scene, who immediately provided first aid to the little girl and accompanied her to the hospital by ambulance.
“The child obviously stayed in the water for quite some time. She is not reacting at all…”, Mr. Sokorelos said characteristically.
It remains unknown how she escaped the attention of the family
It remains unclear at this time how the child escaped the attention of his parents. The family, British tourists, were vacationing in Rhodes with the child’s two older brothers and his grandmother.
New incident of child drowning in a swimming pool on the islands
The tragic incident in Rhodes occurs just four days after the death of a five-year-old boy of Indian origin, who drowned in a hotel swimming pool in Santorini.
The child had fallen into the water without being noticed by his parents, and when he was pulled out he was already unconscious. Despite resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead at the Thira hospital.
