A tendecy for more travel and increased spending by German consumers in 2018 is recorded by the annual Reiseanalyse market survey.
Nearly 70% of Germans say they will definitely or probably go on vacation this year, while 30% are ready to spend more money during holidays, and only 13% report that they will spend less, according to research carried out on a sample of 7,500 respondents.
While there is not much room for growth in the volume of travel, research shows that there is huge potential for added revenue, said research head, Professor Martin Lohmann.
One of the reasons for this optimistic outlook is the general trend towards more quality holidays and more expensive long haul trips.
This sector accounts for 8% of the international travel made by the Germans, a historic high.
The top 10 destinations for 2017 were Spain, Italy, Turkey, Austria, Greece, Croatia, Poland, France, the Netherlands and Portugal.
This year’s surprise, according to the survey, is the stronger trend for city breaks with the most popular Alps destinations being Bavaria and Austria.
Long haul trips grow to compete with traditional winter destinations for ski holidays with marginal cost differences.
Regarding over-tourism, one-third chooses extremely popular destinations and another third destinations with few visitors.
Important factors for good holidays are weather conditions, scenery, local food and drink as well as the general atmosphere at the destination.
