Austria: Record increase in tourist traffic in the winter season

A record 5.52 million overnight stays in Austrian accommodation, the highest number ever, were recorded at the start of the 2024 winter season, marking an annual increase of 6.7% according to data from the Austrian Statistical Office.

Around 58% of overnight stays (+5.9%) are from visitors coming from abroad, while overnight stays by domestic travelers (2.32 million) increased by 7.8%.

The International Tourism Fair Ferien Messe, the largest and most important exhibition event for the tourism sector in Austria, was recently held in Vienna. The number of visitors reached 76,000. The exhibition was attended by 450 exhibitors from 36 countries. Greece participated in the national pavilion of the GNTO Vienna Service, where the following participated: the Regions of Central Macedonia, Eastern Macedonia – Thrace, Ionian Islands and Crete, the Municipalities of Volos-Peliou and Skiathos, the Tourism Organizations of Halkidiki and Thessaloniki, the Panhellenic Camping Association as well as the air transport company Sky Express, which recently included in its routes the direct flight connection Athens – Vienna.

In addition, the Austrian economic research institutes Wifo and IHS announced their forecasts for the formation of the main economic figures for the next two years in Austria. The institutes’ estimates call for growth of 0.6/0.7% in 2025 and 1.2/1.3% in 2026, inflation of 2.3/2.6% in 2025 and 2.6/2.1% in 2026, unemployment of 7.4% in 2025 and 7/7.1% in 2026 and a budget deficit of 4.2/3.8% in 2025 and 4.1/3.6% in 2026.

The Wifo predicts that the increase in domestic consumption and exports will lead to the expected economic growth. The main causes of the fiscal imbalance were the increase in cash social benefits, the rapidly growing number of pensioners and high spending in the areas of health, care, housing, environment, and education.
