The ability of the Cyprus tourism industry to adapt, despite the challenges of recent years, was underlined by the President of the Pancyprian Hoteliers Association (PASYXE), Mr. Thanos Michaelides, in his opening speech at the 46th Cyprus Hotel Summit & HORECA EXPO.
The landmark conference of PASYXE took place today, Friday 21 February 2025, at the City of Dreams Mediterranean, in Limassol, and in the presence of the Director General of the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Mr. Costas Constantinou. Mr. Constantinou, representing the Deputy Minister of Tourism, spoke about the challenges and opportunities for Cypriot tourism.
Mr. Michaelides stressed that last year, over 4 million tourist arrivals were recorded, surpassing the arrival and revenue figures of 2019, a record year for the tourism industry of Cyprus.
The President of the Cyprus Hoteliers Association also stated that “the success of 2024 has proven that there is potential to significantly improve the performance of the sector, provided that we develop a clear strategy and plan for the operation of hotels throughout the year, at a financially sustainable level. We must take courage from the 2024 data, as we observed an improvement in performance, especially for the months of March, October, November and December”.
Specifically, based on monthly arrivals, March 2024 saw a 10% increase compared to March 2023, in November there was a 13% increase and in December an 8% improvement. These increases exceeded the growth we observed in the summer months, which indicates that the operation of hotels throughout the year can be listed.
The President of the Cyprus Hoteliers Association suggested that investments be made in the areas of sports tourism, as well as in special entertainment events such as concerts and international conferences. In addition, there is a need to invest in excursions of special interest, such as wine tourism, archaeological and religious tours, and artistic events, measures with which seasonality can be overcome.
At the same time, he indicated that cooperation between the private and public sectors is important for achieving our goals.
