Tourism | Germans want relaxation on Mediterranean beaches during their summer vacation

The mood of Germans for summer vacations remains high in 2025, after the record year that was 2024.

This conclusion is highlighted by the annual poll of the Association for Holiday and Travel Research FUR, which was presented on Friday.

According to the survey, 75% of Germans surveyed plan to travel in 2025. In fact, 42% have already decided on their vacation destination. The survey sample was 12,000 residents of Germany.

Another finding confirms what travel agents already knew in November: The classic summer destinations around the Mediterranean remain in demand, already having significant reservations. Turkey, Spain, Greece, Croatia, and Italy are at the top of the demand. Egypt is currently on the rise.

A third of Germans undecided

According to the FUR study, a third of Germans do not yet know where they want to travel, but this third definitely wants to travel. Another 17% say they are completely “unsure” about their travel plans. Only 7% of respondents said they do not want to or cannot travel.

The types of trips remain unchanged compared to previous years: “The ranking of the top seven types of vacation is unchanged from the pre-coronavirus periods and also corresponds to the ranking of real demand,” says Ulf Sonntag, head of travel analysis and CEO of the Kiel Institute New Insights for Tourism (NIT).

Relaxation is the main focus of the holiday

Relaxation is the main focus of the summer holidays for Germans. 70% say they are looking forward to a purely relaxing holiday, and around 64% associate relaxation with a beach holiday. Sightseeing, wellness, health, and party trips are also on the rise, while demand for holiday activities is falling slightly, according to the FUR.

The survey also finds some changes in the booking process for Germans in 2024. The proportion of bookings with “personal contact” fell from 37.2% to 34.7%. Online bookings increased by three points to 54.2%, while the share of bookings by email rose from 13.7% to 15.2%.

There is also an increase in bookings through travel agencies and independent consultants. These bookings are made online, via email, or WhatsApp without lengthy consultations.

  • Surprisingly, 0.4% of the 12,000 German citizens surveyed said they still book their holidays by letter or fax.
