Using the new direct flight connection between Thessaloniki and Izmir and within the framework of the strategic strengthening of tourism extroversion, the Thessaloniki Tourism Organization is implementing a targeted program to host journalists, tourism professionals, and influencers from Turkey.
The initiative comes in direct response to the commitment of the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Mr. Stelios Angeloudis, after his recent official visit to Izmir. The main goal is to promote Thessaloniki as an ideal destination for travelers from the neighboring country, taking advantage of the new flight connection that facilitates accessibility and creates new tourism opportunities.
First step: 5-day familiarization trip for Turkish professionals
The program is inaugurated with a five-day fam trip, from 8 to 12 July 2025, with the participation of tourism professionals, media representatives, and social media from Izmir. The action is carried out with the support of AEGEAN, which serves the new air connection, confirming the importance of cooperation between the public and private sectors in strengthening tourism.
The trip program is enriched with cultural, gastronomic, and entertainment experiences that capture the unique identity of Thessaloniki. Guests will visit emblematic places of the city, such as Ano Poli, Ladadika, the Thermaikos beach, while they will participate in interactive activities, such as making traditional bougatsa, local cuisine lessons, and tasting PDO products.
Particular emphasis is also placed on the local market, with guided tours and visits to commercial points, highlighting Thessaloniki not only as a tourist destination but also as a shopping destination.
Promotion with measurable impact
This specific action is part of a broader plan by the Thessaloniki Tourism Organization for the gradual consolidation of the city in the Turkish market. The press and fam trips program aspires to function as a lever for promoting Thessaloniki in Turkish media and social media, reaching out in a targeted manner to an audience that seeks authentic experiences, culture, good food, and entertainment in nearby and hospitable destinations.
The Turkish market is considered of strategic importance for Thessaloniki, not only due to geographical proximity, but also due to the growing middle class in the neighboring country, which shows interest in traveling to Greece. At the same time, the new air connection also paves the way for the development of city break tourism, with Thessaloniki being promoted as an ideal weekend destination.
Synergies with continuity and targeting
The Thessaloniki municipal authority and the Tourism Organization announce that the program will not be limited to this specific trip, but will continue with similar actions, in collaboration with tourism organizations, professionals, and opinion leaders from Turkey. The goal is to create a stable channel of communication and cooperation, which will constantly strengthen Thessaloniki’s position in the Turkish tourism market.
“We want our efforts to have a measurable impact and create added value for the city and the local economy,” said the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Mr. Stelios Angeloudis, emphasizing that such synergies contribute substantially to tourism and economic development.
