Germans don't give up TV even on vacation

For many modern travelers, summer vacations may represent quality time with loved ones in a foreign destination, away from mobile phones and electronic devices, but for Germans, the same is not true.

According to a recent national survey by the IPTV platform waipu.tv in Germany, more than half of German tourists (56%) watch German television programs during their vacations, confirming that contact with domestic news and entertainment remains important even when away from home.

Television… in tourists’ luggage

The survey, which involved more than 3,000 Germans, reveals that although 44% of respondents choose to “disconnect” from German television during the holidays, the majority of Germans remain loyal to their television habits.

Around 43% watch TV via the solutions available in their hotel or rental accommodation, while a significant 12.7% use online TV services such as waipu.tv and Zattoo.

Other access methods, such as satellite TV (8.9%) or digital terrestrial DVB-T2 reception (2.8%), are used less.

Accommodation determines access to German TV

The choice of accommodation seems to be linked to the TV habits of Germans. 90% of Germans who watch German TV on holiday stay either in a hotel (49.9%) or in a rented apartment or house (40%). On the other hand, when camping or on a cruise, TV viewing drops significantly, with only 9% of holidaymakers keeping up with German TV.

For 46% of respondents, the ability to access German TV channels or streaming platforms is considered important or very important. Only 12% say that they are not at all concerned about TV content during their holidays.

The TV (47.3%) remains the most common device for watching TV programs, but the use of smartphones (36.6%) and tablets (32.3%) reveals a shift towards portable and flexible options.
