Dubrovnik by appointment: Reservations for the famous walls from 2026

Dubrovnik mayor Mato Frankovi? has announced a plan to regulate the number of visitors to the city’s iconic walls, aiming to tackle overcrowding. As he revealed on The Independent Daily Travel Podcast, from 2026, entry to the walls will be by reservation only.

“From next year, it will be mandatory to book a day and time of visit,” Frankovi? stressed, adding that there will be a specific number of visitors per time zone.

The measure will be linked to the €40 Dubrovnik Pass, which covers access to museums, galleries, monasteries and, of course, the city walls. The move follows the example of Venice, which last year became the first city in the world to impose an entrance fee for day visitors.

At the same time, a crackdown on short-term rentals and tourist businesses is underway, with the municipality buying apartments to make them available to families at low rents.

Dubrovnik has already taken measures to decongest the historic center: only two cruise ships are allowed at a time, with a minimum stay of eight hours, while tour operators are required to make appointments for the arrival of coaches.

Finally, interest in the city remains high: the Barrhead Travel Group will hold its annual conference at the five-star Dubrovnik Palace Hotel from September 28 to October 1.
