Hersonissos | Strong ties with Great Britain and a vision for sustainable tourism

Hersonissos, one of the most popular destinations for British travelers, was the focus of discussion between Mayor Zacharias Doxastakis and the Consul of the British Embassy in Athens, Alexandra Gregory. The meeting was also attended by the Vice-Consul of the British Consulate in Crete, Aristea Hourdakis, and the Deputy Mayor for Tourism, Katerina Thrapsanioti.

The Mayor highlighted the potential of Hersonissos as a leading Mediterranean destination, with 100 five-star hotels, 200,000 beds and constantly developing hospitality infrastructure. As she emphasized, the goal of the Municipal Authority is for Hersonissos to develop into a model of sustainable tourism, where development will be combined with respect for the environment and cultural heritage.

Mrs. Gregory, for her part, referred to the importance that Great Britain places on quality and safe tourism, noting that British travelers are increasingly choosing organized and certified destinations, such as Hersonissos. She showed particular interest in the sustainability practices implemented by the Municipality, such as the innovative “Pay As You Fly” system, but also in the Civil Protection plan that shields the place against the challenges of tourism development.

The Consul did not hide her admiration for the Minoan Civilization and the palace of Malia, while revealing that she often visited Crete before assuming her duties. Shortly before the conclusion of the meeting, she was awarded the honorary title of visitor by the Mayor, accompanied by souvenirs from the region.

“Chersonissos is not just a vacation destination; it is a place that combines history, culture and vision. And we share this vision with our visitors and partners from all over the world,” said Mr. Doxastakis.
