Region of Crete: Strategic strengthening of the Scandinavian tourism market

The Region of Crete, within the framework of the 2025 Tourism Promotion Program, successfully participated in the “Greek Tourism Workshop” held in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Scandinavia is one of the most important markets for the island’s tourism. The 590,865 arrivals up to September 2025 confirm the steady preference of travelers from Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland for Crete, which remains a top destination for sun, sea and authentic hospitality experiences.

The participation of the Region of Crete in Denmark further strengthens the island’s visibility in the Northern European markets, with the aim of maintaining and strengthening the tourist flow from Scandinavia next year. This presence is expected to contribute to the extension of the tourist season, the increase in arrivals and the promotion of thematic forms of tourism, such as cultural, gastronomic and experiential tourism.

In the framework of the workshop, the delegation of the Region of Crete held meetings with important tour operators, travel agencies and journalists from Denmark and southern Sweden. Particular emphasis was placed on the promotion of the cultural and gastronomic wealth of Crete, the activities and alternative experiences that the island offers beyond the established “Sun & Sea” model, elements that are of particular interest to visitors from Scandinavian countries.

The Region of Crete was represented in the event by the Deputy Regional Governor for Tourism, Dr. Kyriakos Kotsoglou, the Head of the Tourism Directorate of the Region of Crete, Nikos Alexakis, and the Head of the Tourism Department of the Regional Unit of Lassithi, Maria Lavdaki.

The Deputy Regional Governor of Tourism of the Region of Crete, Dr. Kyriakos Kotsoglou, stated: “In Denmark and Copenhagen, within the framework of the tourism promotion of the Region of Crete for 2025-26, neither we were strangers, nor were the Danish agents to us. We presented Crete to Scandinavia, which is their favorite destination. These are markets that will always be among our top ones. The multifaceted, different Crete fits perfectly with the Scandinavian model and we are sure that for another year, the Danes will visit Crete even more, Everywhere!!”
