North Macedonia: Tourism on the rise in 2025 – Subsidies for new air routes from 2026

During the period January-July, the number of tourists in North Macedonia increased by 10.2% compared to the same period last year, according to data from the State Statistical Service of North Macedonia.

Specifically, the number of domestic tourists decreased by 0.1%, while foreign tourists increased by 15.1%. Also, in the seven months, the number of overnight stays increased by 5.5%.

In July, the number of tourists visiting the neighboring country amounted to 209,932 and the number of overnight stays to 770,733. Of the total number of tourists in July 2025, 42.1% were domestic and 57.9% were foreign tourists.

In addition, the government of North Macedonia announced that it will subsidize the introduction of five new air routes, namely flights from Naples and Budapest to Skopje International Airport from April 6, 2026, and from Katowice, Wroclaw and Milan’s main airport, Malpensa, to Ohrid from June 28, 2026. The flights will be operated by Wizz Air, which announced that it will increase passenger capacity by approximately 50% from next year and will offer 3,300,000 seats to North Macedonia on an annual basis.

Wizz Air also said it will maintain a permanent fleet of six aircraft at Skopje airport and replace the existing Airbus A320s with Airbus A321neos. The number of 200 employees in the country working for Wizz Air, which has benefited from state subsidies since 2012, is set to increase by 100. The subsidies for the new five routes will amount to 9 euros per passenger to Skopje airport and 12 euros per passenger to Ohrid airport.
