The municipality of Thira expresses its categorical opposition to any plan that envisages the creation of a private or closed tourist zone in Santorini, following recent international reports about the planned “Royal Beach Club Santorini” by Royal Caribbean International, exclusively for the passengers of its cruise ships.
According to reports by Travel and Tour World and Royal Caribbean Blog, the American company is planning to create a private beach complex on the island, along the lines of the “Royal Beach Club Nassau” in the Bahamas, with the aim of opening in 2026. The space, as reported, will include leisure, dining and activity facilities with limited access only for passengers of Royal Caribbean ships.
At this point, it should be emphasized that the municipality of Thira, reacting to the relevant scenarios, states that Santorini is a public and living place, which cannot be transformed into a private destination for a few. It points out that the establishment of a “private village” or areas of exclusive access would harm the local economy, create social inequalities and alter the cultural and social fabric of the island.
The municipality considers that such initiatives contradict the principles of sustainable development and respect for the local community, announcing that it will take all institutional actions required to protect the public nature of the land, free access and economic activity of the residents.
It is worth noting that Santorini, as a destination-symbol of Greek tourism, has already exceeded the maximum limits of visitation, with more than 1.3 million cruise passengers per year. The international discussions on the necessity of controlling the tourist flow and protecting the natural and social resources of the island thus acquire a new dimension, as the local authorities pursue a model of open, fair and sustainable tourism.
Santorini, as the announcement of the municipality states characteristically, belongs to its people and must remain hospitable to all.
