A coherent, strategically structured, and fully aligned with the principles of sustainable development Tourism Promotion Program for 2026 is being implemented by the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands. The program reflects the long-term tourism strategy of the Municipality, as shaped through continuous dialogue, collaboration, and exchange of expertise with institutional and professional stakeholders in the tourism economy.
Corfu is a mature and internationally established tourist destination, with a strong presence in the sun-and-sea model, while also increasingly diversifying its tourism offerings. In recent years, the upgrade of accommodation infrastructure has been impressive, with a significant increase in high-category hotels, numerous five-star units, and approximately 1,000 tourist villas, further enhancing the qualitative profile of the destination.

At the same time, specialized forms of tourism, such as cultural and religious tourism, as well as outdoor activities, are being actively developed, leveraging the islands unique natural and cultural assets. This development enriches Corfus identity and significantly contributes to the extension of the tourist season, which now exceeds seven months. Maritime tourism remains particularly important, as Corfu ranks among the most popular ports in the Eastern Mediterranean, with cruise ship arrivals throughout the year, including the winter months, and is also one of the most popular destinations for pleasure boats, featuring the largest marina in Greece by capacity.
The 2026 Tourism Promotion Program is based on scientifically substantiated analysis of statistical data on tourist flows and the broader market environment. For example, based on currently available data, in 2025 total arrivals (excluding cruises) increased by more than 5.5%, while cruise arrivals grew by 8.49%, confirming the positive momentum of the destination and the need for methodical and targeted planning.
The central axis of the program is the promotion of Corfus local identity, with emphasis on its cultural and natural heritage, which constitute the destinations main comparative advantages. Tourism promotion is part of a broader tourism policy framework that seeks to balance development with respect for tradition and the environment, while supporting the local community.
The design of the actions aims to build a modern and comprehensive destination marketing approach, capable of meeting contemporary demands in a highly competitive international environment. Within this framework, activities include, among others, the development of a strategic marketing study, creation of a complete branding and commercial identity guide, and production of high-quality content, which will serve as stable foundations for Corfus future promotion.
Special emphasis is placed on outward-looking approaches and cooperation with institutional and tourism stakeholders, reflected practically in the composition of the Municipalitys Tourism Promotion and Development Committee. Notably, the Deputy Mayor of Sustainable Tourism Development and Public Relations, Spyros Chalkiopoulos (photo), stated:
“Above all, for 2026, our main goal is to further strengthen the spirit of cooperation among all tourism stakeholders and to expand it with new participants. We have already established a series of joint actions that demonstrate that Corfu can function as a unified, mature, and strategically oriented destination. With this spirit, we continue.”
The 2026 Tourism Promotion Program aspires to serve as a reliable tool for sustainable development, for the benefit of the local economy and society.
