Ionian Islands Region Cooperation with China – Tourism, Culture and Education in Focus

The Ionian Islands Region recorded a strong extroverted presence at the World Chinese Language Conference (WCLC 2025), which took place in Beijing from 14 to 16 November, with the participation of the Regional Governor Yiannis Trepeklis.

During the conference, a cooperation protocol was signed between the Ionian Islands Region and the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, which opens new channels of cooperation in areas of strategic interest, such as tourism, culture and education.

At this point, it should be emphasized that the agreement is part of the multi-level international cultural diplomacy promoted by the region, highlighting the role of the Ionian Islands as a cultural and geographical hub between East and West. This new cooperation aims to strengthen the region’s tourist presence in the Chinese market, through actions that combine cultural exchange, educational programs and promotion of the Greek way of life.

In the context of the contacts in Beijing, the regional governor had a series of meetings with officials and representatives of the academic and business community, with the aim of exploring collaborations in the field of tourism investments, education and cultural networking.

As Yannis Trepeklis pointed out, “the presence of the Ionian Islands Region in international forums and the development of institutional relations with countries such as China, strengthen the image of our islands as a destination with cultural depth, tourist maturity and international perspective”.

The World Chinese Language Congress 2025, which attracted approximately 5,000 participants from more than 160 countries, was a key event of global scope. The letter of the President of China, Xi Jinping, to the young sinologists of the Congress, in which he invited them to function as “messengers of civilizations”, reflected the high level of international dialogue that developed and strengthened the framework within which the presence of the Ionian Islands Region is now placed.

In any case, the visit to Beijing marks the entry of the Ionian Islands Region into a new era of strategic cooperation with China. Using academic diplomacy, the interconnection of culture and education, and methodical penetration into one of the largest markets in the world, the Region is investing in a development network that will bring significant and long-term benefits to our islands and is a fundamental factor in creating a favorable framework for the development of entrepreneurship and tourism.
